Ok thank you! I told my parents and the owner of my online community(he's 29) about this and they said not to answer and now that you tell me that I will no longer answer his calls or call him back if he leaves a message. I appreciate your help as I was truly frightened. What subject of the FCC would this case be under? I will call and file a complaint about him if this is listed under their topics

He claims he is from Benton Conty Sheriff's Department. I live in Alabama and there is not a Benton county in Alabama. I have talked to local authorities and they said it is a scam. Another thing, if he is truly a "detective," then when he went to court his name would be on the court papers. Court papers are available to the public unless it is a youthful offender case. His name can't be found anywhere on the Internet, which it should be if he is being honest.

I also looked up both number he gave me, one in birmingham AL while the other is in Monroe AL, a full 3 hours and 18 minutes apart. He also told me I have to work as a Confidential Informant for him for 2 weeks or im going to go to jail. He claims I spoke to a 13 year old and made inappropriate gestures towards her over an online chat. I wasn't even on when these events occured. I do not know what to do

http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2012/04/broadway.shtmCourt Halts Alleged Fake Debt Collector Calls from India, Grants FTC Request to Stop Defendants Who Posed as Law EnforcersCalifornia-based Defendant Ran Phantom Debt Collection Scheme from His Home, FTC AllegesIn response to charges from the Federal Trade Commission, a U.S. district court has halted an operation that the agency alleges collected phantom payday loan debts that consumers either didn't owe to the defendants or didn't owe at all. The defendants' scheme involved more than 2.7 million calls to at least 600,000 different phone numbers nationwide, according to the FTC. In less than two years, they fraudulently collected more than $5.2 million from consumers, many of whom were strapped for cash and thought the money they were paying would be applied to loans they owed, according to FTC documents filed with the court. The court order temporarily stops the illegal conduct and freezes the operation’s assets while the FTC moves ahead with the court proceedings and seeks refunds for consumers. As part of its continuing crackdown on scams that target consumers in financial distress, the agency charged Tracy, California-based Kirit Patel and two companies he controls with violating the FTC Act and the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.Often pretending to be American law enforcement agents such as "Officer Mike Johnson" or representatives of fake government agencies like the "Federal Crime Unit of the Department of Justice," callers from India who were working with the defendants would harass consumers with back-to-back calls, according to the FTC. One consumer reported that the caller threatened to have her children taken away if she did not pay, according to court documents.Another consumer told the FTC, “The callers threatened me and claimed they would arrest me if I didn’t pay them the alleged debt. One of the callers even contacted my neighbors and told me he was watching my house. The callers had a lot of . . . personal information about me, including my work address. One caller told me, ‘We just saw you walk into your office building,’ and then listed my office address. Another caller told me there were 55 warrants out for my arrest. Sometimes my caller ID would indicate that the call was from the FBI. Because the callers knew so much about me, I believed they were police officers or FBI agents. The calls scared me and I was often shaking when I hung up the phone."In difficult economic times, consumers may turn to high-interest, short-term payday loans between paychecks. The FTC alleges that information submitted by consumers who applied for these loans online found its way into the defendants’ hands.  Because the callers had this information – which often included Social Security or bank account numbers – and because many of the victims already were in a tenuous financial situation, they often believed that they owed the defendants the money, according to the FTC. In some cases, when consumers made the allegedly bogus payments, they had nothing left over to cover legitimate expenses: Two mothers reported that they could not buy Christmas presents for their families after making payments on the phony debts. The defendants typically demanded several hundred dollars and, in violation of federal law, routinely used obscene language and threatened to sue or have consumers arrested, according to the FTC’s complaint. They also threatened to tell the victims’ employers, relatives, and neighbors about the bogus debt, and sometimes followed through on these threats, the FTC alleged.Once victims were pressured into paying, the callers instructed them to use a pre-paid debit card such as a Wal-Mart MoneyCard, another debit card, a credit card, or Western Union so the money could be deposited into one of the defendants’ merchant processing accounts, the FTC alleged. Even after victims made a payment, the harassing calls often continued, forcing them to change their phone numbers, or close their credit cards or bank accounts in an effort to get the calls to stop, according to documents filed with the court. The FTC alleged that of the $5.2 million the defendants collected, almost $1 million was returned or charged back by their merchant processor, resulting in consumer injury totaling more than $4.2 million. The complaint alleges that the defendants violated the FTC Act and the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act by:    misrepresenting that they had the authority to collect on supposedly delinquent loans that consumers owed, they were a law enforcement authority or were affiliated with a government agency, and that consumers would be arrested, imprisoned, or sued; and    using obscene or profane language, and calling consumers repeatedly with the intent to annoy, abuse, or harass them. For more information about how to handle callers who claim to be debt collectors, seeWho’s Calling? That Debt Collector Could Be a Fake. The Commission vote authorizing the staff to file the complaint was 4-0. The FTC filed the complaint and request for a temporary restraining order in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California on April 3, 2012.  On April 5, 2012, the court granted the FTC’s request.  The FTC would like to thank the Better Business Bureau for its assistance in this case.NOTE: The Commission files a complaint when it has reason to believe that the law has been or is being violated, and it appears to the Commission that a proceeding is in the public interest. The complaint is not a finding or ruling that the defendant has actually violated the law.The Federal Trade Commission works for consumers to prevent fraudulent, deceptive, and unfair business practices and to provide information to help spot, stop, and avoid them. To file a complaint in English or Spanish, visit the FTC s online Complaint Assistant or call 1-877-FTC-HELP (1-877-382-4357).  The FTC enters complaints into Consumer Sentinel, a secure, online database available to more than 2,000 civil and criminal law enforcement agencies in the U.S. and abroad.  The FTC’s website provides free information on a variety of consumer topics.  Like the FTC on Facebook and follow us on Twitter.

I was contacted by Detective Sanchez on Friday the 13th stating that I was to contact him within two hours or he was going to turn my case over to the district atty. of Benton Co. and if he didnt hear from me by Monday then he would have me expedited on federal charges per D.A. orders. I contacted him and he told me the allegations and that he would contact me in 30 mins after the first contact to see if charges would be dropped. He said he realized I was serious. Then he stated that they had decided to give me a warning and I have to a fine of $100. Then he told me a 2nd number to call and report in everyday til the 19th when i am to get the info to send the payment for the fine. But the 2nd number is just like a cell phone voice mail. To the "employee". You sound bitter for sure, but the reason I even googled BB&T's collection # is because they owe ME money! So don't act like companies never mess up. BB&T is saying that I owe them for something that I have already paid, and I have the proof. They are not calling me, but I did get an incorrect letter. This is from several years ago, and I have a "good", steady job, pay my bills on time, and work for a law firm. So if they don't get their act together they may be getting sued. I mean get real, just because you work for a company doesn't mean they never make a mistake. I remember when I needed my tax info. from BB&T and I had to go to THREE branches before I got help, because even the bank mangaers were confused...and NO it wasn't complicated at all. I had an IRA, and needed my information (which I had never recieved prior), and they made it seem like brain surgery. And let's not forget the time they couldn't get my change of address straight (and I did it TWICE)...send my bank card to an address in GA. BUT with all that said they are better than most banks...but NOT faultless, and after this last thing...with me "owing them"...I may have to switch.

I agree 100% with other customers above and the comment from the "employee" are about the same as we recieve from customer relations. We have got the call and go immediately to our local bank to be told that our accounts are current (by the computer) only to be called the next day again requesting the same info (last 4 of SSN) We go back to the bank and are told we don't have a payment due until a certain date. We tell the "collector" what we found out at our local bank and they tell us thay are wrong, that we are past due. So we are making arrangements to pay them off and take our meager business some where else!!

I have recieved more than 60 calls from your center this month. I have ignored them all. I get your voice mails as well. I ignore them too. I have a personal banker but she is too busy to communicate with me. I have conferred  with many BB&T customer service reps and tellers to obtain my current standing with the bank. They all give me a different balance. Your computer system is too complicated for them to understand the linkage between my five accounts. One time I let the phone bank rage for over a week (3-5 calls a day) over a $7 issue that was the banks fault in the first place. I figure it keeps you and many others employed and that's good...way too many are not. I understand the frustration you and the other phone bank employees have, dealing with so much verbal abuse. My son worked in a call center when he was in high school and came home many nights almost in tears or in utter frustration from the abuse. Grace calls for sensitivity on both sides. I will bring cash to my local BB&T bank tomorrow to clear all my accounts and late fees as they will not honor checks from my other banks. BB&T's lack of sensitivity to its clients, its bureucratic greed and its menu of usury charges is only exceeded by Wells Fargo and BankAmerica. Have a great New Year. Pray that next year will be better.

First I must say that I do personally apologize for the initial BB& T employee's remarks. Second, there is an issue with the local branch properly identifying whether an account is in good standings or not. It appears on their main screen that you owe $250 on your misc account on 7/4/10. Your last payment received was on 5/2/10 for $125. If they go about 4 screens forward they will see that you are past due (probably and oversight) for the 6/4/10 payment of $125. Add the June and July payments together, and wah-la, $250 is due on or before your next due date. This is a training issue within the branch, and I speak  with clients all of the time via telephone that have experienced this misconception. Third, in the collections and customer service departments, our systems are designed to search by name, account number and or SSN# only. Boy do I wish we had more options (Ie, phone numbers, addresses, etc.). When a client calls in we see a blank screen, and we have to have a starting point. A client's curiosity is understood, but we have to request information to locate the account, and reason for the call. Some departments call on several different products. You don't know how many times a day I hear clients say, "I don't know my name, you should you called me."Lastly, the identification process thru pertinent personal information is actually a part of privacy laws, and an effort to protect you. If you do not feel confident giving the last 4 of your SS# or entire SS#, give your full name and address. An associate can locate your profile that way.

Dear Idiot-  I am so glad that your education advanced your career so much that you are a lowly debt collector. You probably didn't even need a high school education for that did you?  Anyway, I paid my car off 3 months ago.  I owe nothing and cannot get your incredibly competent institution to send me my title, but they are trying to collect a debt that no longer exists.  I am a lawyer and guess what? This looks like a class action to me after some investigation.  With any luck I can put enough hurt on your company so your job is too expensive to do in the U.S. and goes to India.  Good luck with no job and I hope you never have a time when you have a hard time paying bills. You really are a moron so another profession looks doubtful.

First of your  the idiot. I got a phone call from this number as well and they left a message only saying I need to call back at this number, never leaving their name, who they are with, or what it was in reference to. I called back and they wanted all my info asking for my ss # account #'s and when I told them I would call my local branch hung up on me. I called my local branch and they said that they didn't call everything was good and that this number is not valid. I don't have any outstanding debt., so for you to get on here and try to make judgement on someone just shows how much of an idiot you are. There are way too many scams out there for someome to just give out their info as a matter of fact it sounds like your one of those low life people who run scams on people instead of going out and getting a job there is no way you work for BB&T because you have to have some form of intelligence, which you clearly showed for all to see you don't.

To the brutal  brutal BB&T employee. I wrote a wrong amount on a check to BB&T by mistake for I must have accidentally looked at a wrong slip. The bank started terorrizing me with phone calls. I contacted a local branch because none of the 800 number would let me speak to a person. The rep explained what was wrong with my account, however, she told me that BB&T bank would never call their customers and said that I should ignore any of those calls. This was said by a BB&T employee !!!Once I got a voice mail from BB&T with such a horrible accent that I could barely inderstand what she wanted and felt very reluctant to return her call. So, you'd better first remove all idiots from your own place of emplyment !!! Get a decent customer service !!! And nake sure that all the employees are aware of different procedures going on in the bank and also give them some free English classes so that they would not scare away customers !!!

HA! I got the same phone call. Only the person on the line spoke so fast that I had to listen to it several times in order to get the number. Here's the deal....I am a BB&T customer. I don't have any debt with BB&T that is past due. I have a personal banker at BB&T. So, if there is a problem, she would call me.And I would have to say that if I am in a conversation with anyone that works in collections for a living....guess who would most likely be the "stupid idiot".In today's world of scams, I am not giving my last 4 digits of my social security number to anyone who just happens to call. If you think I am, well...then you're the "stupid idiot".If BB&T collections has an issue with me...contact my personal banker. If you don't know who that is, then some "stupid idiot" needs to make sure it's in your computer system.Enjoy your benefits and paycheck from your collections job!

She asked if I had a loan with BB&T and if I did, I could give her my social security number and she could pull up the account and tell me why they were calling.  I confirmed with BB&T Bank that they were not trying to contact me about any of my accounts; that everything was in good standing.

I am glad I looked this up. I did not answer...oh...and I don't have a husband, so I guess they wouldn't want to deal with me anyway.

Phone rang from this number again today.  This time, the phone went "click" when I said hello.  STOP CALLING US!!  We are on the Do Not Call List, which obviously is not enforced.  I know you are looking for my husband, but he is rarely home, and I answer ALL the calls and make ALL the decisions here.  If you do not stop calling us at our 410-515 home phone, I will do whatever it takes through the proper authorities to stop you.  We do not want your calls, or any other, and would do NO BUSINESS with a telephone solicitor!

I answered phone, and male voice asked to speak to my husband.  This caller knew my husband's name.  I told caller he was not home, and asked who was calling.  Caller stated he was "Don Johnson"and abruptly hung up.  I called the number on caller I.D. and received recorded message that mailbox was full, and no message could be left.  We are on the Do Not Call List, and are particularly fed up with anonymous and irritating calls from California, which we receive too many of.  We would do NO business with anyone who calls from there!

This number calls and never leaves a message. 213 is a California area code. Caller ID info says "unavailable". My policy is to not answer if I don't recognize the number, if they don't leave a message then it must not be important.
