Not gonna lie these calls are getting really annoying. I'm ALWAYS at work when they call and today they called about an hour ago.. of course I couldn't answer it again, but I finally went to go call back & no ring tone? My work phone just automatically hangs up, which I'm guessing relates to everyone else's phone saying number doesn't exist. I also have a 708 area code--IDK if everyone else is in the same situation.

I received a solicitation call from 708-208-1850, on my cell phone.  At 5:43 AM.  When I was on a cruise ship, where incoming calls cost $3.00 per minute.  Needless to say, I was not pleased to be awakened with an automated sales pitch for health insurance, on my dime.My cell phone is not on the do-not-call list, because I was under the impression that cell phone numbers were automatically covered by it.  Right? Wrong?  Can I file a complaint about a telemarketer calling a cell phone number, even if I haven't placed that number on the do-not-call list?Chris.
Report by File a Complaint Long ago Unknown
I too received an automated call from 708-208-1850 offering health insurance.Attempts to call this number all reached a recording saying that 708-208-1850 was not in service.  This isn't the way most honest companies operate. If you have registered your phone on the do-not-call list file a complaint (if you haven't why not?).  For example, since the caller's supposed area code (708) is Illinois, file a complaint on the form at this address:http://www.illinoisattorneygeneral.gov/donotcall/dnccomplaint.pdfIf you don't live in Illinois do a search for your state's Attorney Gneral they will have a similar form.

Report all of these calls to www.donotcall.gov.  The more people complain, the more serious the government will be to go after these companies.

I just received one of these on my cell phone.  Its Aug.23rd.  It had a pre-recorded message from an "independent insurance broker" about obtaining a health insurance plan.

This phone number is fake.  208 is a nonexistent prefix in the 708 area code.  Do not call them back because the number does not exist.  This company is shady to be using a faked caller ID.  Beware.

They tried calling me a few days from a different number but i wasn't home, they then called today but i didn't answer because i didn't know the number. I think they're calling because i filled out a ballot at a stand on Canada day.

Just got the call, yeah hard to get the name out of them, said I won just have to pay $299/person (2)plus processing and port fees ($149)...not so free! Now just give your credit card number you have a year to use this...blah blah blah.  Sucks, got all excited and then realized it was a scam! Don't bother answering if you get the call. They are meant to call back in 30mins, after I check them out...doubt they will cal! I also informed Better Buisness Bureau and they were very helpful.

I got the same call, and initially fully believed it because I remember filling out a ballot at my local festival. unfortunately i gave my information, but then realized and hung up. I didn't go through with the second half of the call that was meant to record and confirm your information. I called my bank to change my credit number instantly. This recording is apparently what these people use to confirm that you authorized them charging this fee if you dispute it.

My friend and I had signed ballots and entered them into a draw at a country music festival.  My friend called me at work yesterday and was so excited that she won a trip to the Bahamas...she told me how she drilled the guy for an hour about how it was a scam and he kept saying "why would we do that?".  She gave him her info and credit card number...then today at work I got a phone call from a guy named "Ronald" at FBC vacations who told me I won a trip to the Bahamas.. I was working so he said he would call me back.  I told my friend and she canceled her credit card and the credit card company is watching for suspicious behaviour on her new card.  Now the keeps calling me and doesn't leave voicemail or anything.  I hope they catch those losers they're wasting everyone's time. A friend of mine told me that the wedding shows, festivals, etc.. they just get paid to put up random booths and the have nothing to do with it!  That is horrible, had I known i was putting my name in for a scam I wouldn't have gone near that booth!

Yeah, got the same call today.  They said they were from FBC Vacations (Forever Bahama Cruise Vacations...or something like that).  I told them I wasn't available to talk because I was at work so they said they would call me back later.  Something felt strange about the call, so I'm glad I told them I was busy.  I'll definitely be saying no if they call back.

I just got a call from this number too.  He said that I had won a trip to the Bahamas from a ballet that I had filled out at Canada Blooms last weekend.  He was very persistent about me giving him my credit card info so that I could pay for the $299 deposit.  The whole thing seemed totally off to me so I just said no.

I was called from this number 45 minutes ago with the same offer. I filled out a ballot at a travel agency booth at the Total Wedding show in Toronto, Jan 16-18, 2009. They said I won a cruise to the Caribbean or Mexico, they asked me if I was of age, if I had a valid credit card, and wanted to speak to both me and my fiancee. I said they could reach my fiancee if they called back in half an hour. Haven't called back yet. Obviously, not going to give them my credit card info. They didn't identify their agency's name.

I just had a similar call from a ballot I entered at the Vancouver outdoor show.  It definately sounds like a scam although they try very hard to convince you that it must be legimate because they have to be a real business to get a booth at the show (yet they don't have a website) and he also said that the credit card company would cover me if it was a scam, which I don't believe as technically you are giving them authorization to charge your card!

Yep, happened to me too - filled out a ballot at the Taboo Sex Show in WPG this past weekend - when they asked for the credit card (which I did have on me) I told them it was at home and no way to retrieve it.  They just said they had to terminate the call then - I would never give my credit card out over the phone - or pay for "fee's" before booking a "free" holiday cruise...

wrongIF YOU WIN - you are not required to pay anything upfront!  If you would do the reseach you would have known it was a ripoff. http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/telemarketing/tel17.shtmPrize Offers: You Don’t Have to Pay to Play! Congratulations, it’s your lucky day! You’ve just won $5,000!You’re guaranteed to win a fabulous diamond ring, luxury vacation or all-terrain vehicle! If you receive a letter or phone call with a message like this, be skeptical. The $5,000 "prize" may cost you hundreds of dollars in taxes or service charges — and never arrive. Your "fabulous" prize may not be worth collecting. The diamond is likely to be the size of a pinhead. The "vacation" could be one night in a seedy motel, and the ATV, nothing more than a lounge chair on wheels!Scam artists often use the promise of a valuable prize or award to entice consumers to send money, buy overpriced products or services, or contribute to bogus charities. People who fall for their ploys may end up paying far more than their "prizes" are worth, if they get a prize at all. What these people are likely to get - especially if they signed up for a contest drawing at a public place or event — may be more than they bargained for: more promotions in the mail, more telemarketing calls and more unsolicited commercial email, or "spam." This is because many prize promoters sell the information they collect to advertisers. Worse yet, contest entrants might subject themselves to a bogus prize promotion scam. And The Winner Is... Everyone loves to be a winner. A recent research poll showed that more than half of all American adults entered sweepstakes within the past year. Most of these contests were run by reputable marketers and non-profit organizations to promote their products and services. Some lucky winners received millions of dollars or valuable prizes. Capitalizing on the popularity of these offers, some con artists disguise their schemes to look legitimate. And an alarming number of people take the bait. Every day, consumers throughout the United States lose thousands of dollars to unscrupulous prize promoters. During 1999 alone, the Federal Trade Commission received more than 10,000 complaints from consumers about gifts, sweepstakes and prize promotions. Many received telephone calls or postcards telling them they'd won a big prize - only to find out that to claim it, they had to buy something or pay as much as $10,000 in fees or other charges. There's a big difference between legitimate sweepstakes and fraudulent ones. Prizes in legitimate contests are awarded solely by chance, and contestants don't have to pay a fee or buy something to enter or increase their odds of winning. In fraudulent schemes, however, "winners" almost always have to dip into their pockets to enter a contest or collect their "prize."Skill Contests There's one notable exception: skill contests. These are puzzles, games or other contests in which prizes are awarded based on skill, knowledge or talent - not on chance. Contestants might be required to write a jingle, solve a puzzle or answer questions correctly to win.Unlike sweepstakes, skill contests may legally require contestants to buy something or make a payment or donation to enter. It's important to recognize that many consumers are deceptively lured into playing skill contests by easy initial questions or puzzles. Once they've sent their money and become "hooked," the questions get harder and the entry fees get steeper. Entrants in these contests rarely receive anything for their money and effort. Consumer Protections Several consumer laws help protect consumers against fraudulent sweepstakes and prize offers promoted through the mail or by phone. Telephone Solicitations Telemarketers frequently use sweepstakes and prize contests to sell magazines or other goods and services. These telemarketers make an initial contact with consumers through "cold calls," or take calls from consumers who are responding to a solicitation they received by mail. The Telemarketing Sales Rule helps protect consumers from fraudulent telemarketers who use prize promotions as a lure. In every telemarketing call involving a prize promotion, the law requires telemarketers to tell you:the odds of winning a prize. If the odds can't be determined in advance, the promoter must tell you the factors used to calculate the odds. that you don't have to pay a fee or buy something to win a prize or participate in the promotion. if you ask, how to participate in the contest without buying or paying anything. what you'll have to pay or the conditions you'll have to meet to receive or redeem a prize. The Telemarketing Sales Rule prohibits telemarketers from misrepresenting any of these facts, as well as the nature or value of the prizes. It also requires telemarketers who call you to pitch a prize promotion to tell you before they describe the prize that you don't have to buy or pay anything to enter or win.Written Solicitations Many sweepstakes promotions arrive by mail as a letter or postcard that instructs the consumer to respond by return mail or phone to enter a contest or collect a prize. The Deceptive Mail Prevention and Enforcement Act helps protect consumers against fraudulent sweepstakes promotions sent through the mail. The law prohibits:claims that you're a winner unless you've actually won a prize. requirements that you buy something to enter the contest or to receive future sweepstakes mailings. the mailing of fake checks that don't clearly state that they are non-negotiable and have no cash value. seals, names or terms that imply an affilia-tion with or endorsement by the federal government. Skill Contests Skill contests also are covered by the new Deceptive Mail Prevention and Enforcement Act. The law requires the sponsors to disclose in a clear and conspicuous way:the terms, rules and conditions of the contest. how many rounds of the contest you must achieve to win the grand prize. the time frame for the winner to be determined. the name of the contest's sponsor. an address where you can reach the sponsor to request that your name be removed from the mailing list. Just Say "No" Another way to protect yourself is to request that your name be removed from mail and telephone solicitation lists. The Telemarketing Sales Rule requires telemarketers to keep a "do not call" list of consumers who have asked not to be called again. Calling a consumer who has made this request is illegal and can subject the telemarketer to a hefty fine. The Deceptive Mail Prevention and Enforcement Act requires companies that use direct mail to maintain a similar "do not mail" list for consumers who call or write and ask that their name be removed from the mailing list. This new law gives caregivers the right to have the names of the friends and loved ones under their care removed from the mailing lists of undesirable solicitors.Another way to reduce mail and telephone solicitations is to contact the Direct Marketing Association to request that your name be placed on its "do not call," "do not mail" and "do not email" lists. Association members agree not to solicit consumers who have requested that they not be contacted. To have your name removed from direct mail marketing lists, write: Direct Marketing Association, Preference Service Manager, 1120 Avenue of the Americas, New York, New York 10036-6700. To have your name removed from telemarketing lists, write: Direct Marketing Association, Preference Service Manager, 1120 Avenue of the Americas, New York, New York 10036-6700. To "opt out" of receiving unsolicited commercial email, use the DMA's form at www.e-mps.org.A Dozen Ways to Protect YourselfThe next time you get a "personal" letter or telephone call telling you "it’s your lucky day," the Federal Trade Commission encourages you to remember that: Legitimate sweepstakes don’t require you to pay or buy something to enter or improve your chances of winning, or to pay "taxes" or "shipping and handling charges" to get your prize. If you have to pay to receive your "prize," it’s not a prize at all.Sponsors of legitimate contests identify themselves prominently; fraudulent promoters are more likely to downplay their identities. Legitimate promoters also provide you with an address or toll-free phone numbers so you can ask that your name be removed from their mailing list.Bona fide offers clearly disclose the terms and conditions of the promotion in plain English, including rules, entry procedures, and usually, the odds of winning. It’s highly unlikely that you’ve won a "big" prize if your notification was mailed by bulk rate. Check the postmark on the envelope or postcard. Also be suspicious of telemarketers who say you’ve won a contest you can’t remember entering.Fraudulent promoters might instruct you to send a check or money order by overnight delivery or courier to enter a contest or claim your "prize." This is a favorite ploy for con artists because it lets them take your money fast, before you realize you’ve been cheated.Disreputable companies sometimes use a variation of an official or nationally recognized name to give you confidence in their offers. Don’t be deceived by these "look-alikes." It’s illegal for a promoter to misrepresent an affiliation with — or an endorsement by — a government agency or other well-known organization. It’s important to read any written solicitation you receive carefully. Pay particularly close attention to the fine print. Remember the old adage that "the devil is in the details."Agreeing to attend a sales meeting just to win an "expensive" prize is likely to subject you to a high-pressure sales pitch.Signing up for a sweepstakes at a public location or event, through a publication or online might subject you to unscrupulous prize promotion tactics. You also might run the risk of having your personal information sold or shared with other marketers who later deluge you with offers and advertising. Some contest promoters use a toll-free "800" number that directs you to dial a pay-per-call "900" number. Charges for calls to "900" numbers may be very high.Disclosing your checking account or credit card account number over the phone in response to a sweepstakes promotion — or for any reason other than to buy the product or service being sold — is a sure-fire way to get scammed in the future.Your local Better Business Bureau and your state or local consumer protection office can help you check out a sweepstakes promoter’s reputation. Be aware, however, that many questionable prize promotion companies don’t stay in one place long enough to establish a track record, and the absence of complaints doesn’t necessarily mean the offer is legitimate. To File a ComplaintConsumers who believe they have been victimized by fraudulent promotional offers also should contact their local postmaster or the U.S. Postal Inspection Service by phone, toll-free, at: 1-888-877-7644; by email at: www.uspsoig.gov; or by mail at: U.S. Postal Inspection Service, Office of Inspector General, Operations Support Group, 222 S. Yep, Americredit. I use Mr. Number on my cell so everytime they call from a different number, I add it to the list. I tried letting them know exactly when I would be paying (same time every month) but still get the calls. They can keep on and I'll just keep blocking all the numbers.

I have never had any dealings with them. Ever. My car is paid off. In spite of that, they started calling me two weeks ago. Here is the kicker: They call my home phone, and we have the ringer off (it is used ONLY for outbound faxes). This is the recording they, or anyone else that calls hears:  "Thank you of calling. This telephone is used only for outbound faxing, and not for voice use. You are welcome to leave a message, but it will do you no good. Anyone that is important to us has our cell phones. If you do not have our cell phone, there is probably a damn good reason you don't".  We do not identify ourselves on the message. We clear the caller ID  about once a week, noting the numbers of repeat callers, then google the numbers for any calls that are not identified. That is how I got on this site. They can waste there time forever for all I care.

20 Report Long ago Unknown
Yes it is Americredit. I have had my car for 5 years now and it's almost paid off and yet they still think I might not pay them each month...it's pretty rediculous. They begin calling within 3-4 days after the payment is due and continue calling 5-8 times every day until the payment is made. I've called them to let them know I'll be making the payment in the past, even give them a specific date and ask for a courtesy hold to stop the useless calls, and, while they used to do the courtesy hold (I get paid bi-monthly, so I, like others, pay on a certain week) now days they won't unless I give them a check by phone. I use cash and cash only, so no bank account for me, hence I cannot do the check by phone deal. So I just roll them to voicemail when they call and even wait until the last possible minute to pay them just so they have to pay for someone (or some machine) to call me upteen times a day. It doesn't bother me a bit, I just ignore them, they know they'll get paid. Today they texted me for the first time. Texts cost ME money and I believe that is probably illegal for them to do that...we will see. Either way, still not calling them. Apparantly I'm not the only one that doesn't pay right on the due date..and apparantly, they are financially in a crunch to be harassing their customers like this on a constant basis. Good thing I don't do the debt thing anymore, even if I did, I'd NEVER consider them as a lender ever again because of their collection practices.

This is Americredit's collection desk.  They usually start in about five days after the amount comes due, and typically they continue to call four or five times daily, almost always with a recording.  Most of the calls (at least on the West Coast) come during their off hours, making it difficult to talk to someone if they call *you*.  If you negotiate a payment, they will usually continue to call, as their automated dialer only takes you off the list if your payment is current (although I've managed to get them to hold off if I'm paying in full within a week, which they call a "courtesy hold").Be aware that their collection people are of uneven quality.  One hapless lass seemed unable to understand that I had made arrangements to pay the following week, all but threatening to repossess my car (at two weeks past due, no less!).  I called back on Monday, spoke to someone else, and had it all fixed right away, with no further calls.  I suggest calling them during the weekdays; every other time they don't seem to have their "A-Team" at the phones to service accounts.

I too got a new cell phone number and since an hour after it was activated last friday night and they have called at least once a day (today twice so far, and it's now 3pm). All hours and any day with no shame! Sunday night at 8pm...YUP! Saturday morning at 7:30am...YOU BETCHA!! I hit the number to transfer to a representative and they said they were looking for "Jose". Told them twice that I will call State Attorney General and report them if they call me again...both times they said they would take my #  off their list. They've called three times since then (two days ago). I will be writing a letter to them in regards to it. I just got a bunch of letter for helping to repair credit, etc...and this is the exact subject of one (I guess we're not the only one and it's common-place in our society). I will post it when I finish it so that all of you who are being called incorrectly and harassed can use it as a template to send to them....hopefully that will be enough.
