Something just didnt sound right so I did a search on the internet and found this site.  The message had already started and all I could hear was MS. Unger, phone number, and reference id#.

The reason why they get away with it more then they should is because NO ONE IS BOTHERING TO REPORT THEM or SUE THEM. IF everyone getting illegal collection calls would report them as REQUIRED -these law breakers would be out of business.
Report by granny of 3 Long ago Unknown
I agree. While debt collectors don't come under the rules of the "Do Not Call" registry, they are supposed to obey the rules of the FDCPA. And they get away with more than they should. If you are being harassed by this (or any other debt collector), send them a Cease and Desist Letter (VIA Certified Mail with return receipt requested) and file a complaint with the FTC:https://rn.ftc.gov/pls/dod/wsolcq$.startup?Z_ORG_CODE=PU01If these collectors keep calling you after they receive your letter, you can collect up to $1,000 PER violation.

They keep calling for some female, I'm guessing she use to have the number I have now, I can not understand the name spoken by the female who is asking for her, I tracked the number & came up with this "NCO Debt Collection", the calls always start with an aotumated voice but when it comes to asking for this female it sounds like an India woman & no matter how many times I have said they have the wrong number or "press 4" to let them know that I am not who they are looking for they keep calling. After pressing 4 to let them know I am not the female they are asking for I was told to "please stay on the line until a represenetive can assist" me.Since I found out the company calling I added it to my cell phone so I know when to let them listen to my voice mail, I recorded a 4 minute message, by the time it is over they have disconnected.

Enid,Debt collectors don't only call when you OWE a bill.  Debt collectors call when they are told to cal by their bosses or by their system of attempting to collect on debts.  Here's why:  If they collect a penny on an old debt, then you can become obligated for the whole amount, even if it is beyond the time limit.  Thus, they ROUTINELY make calls on old debt to try to get some idiot to pay on a debt that has been written off, so that they can resurrect it in Court, thereby becoming able to negotiate a settlement of anywhere from half to a third of the total debt amount, when they have paid approximately six cents on the dollar for the debt from the original owners of the note.Debt collectors are the sleaziest people on the planet.  The only people sleazier are the managers and owners of debt collection companies.

You are assuming, Enid, that each of these phone calls is legitimate.  These slimeballs, in their attempt to collect on debts, spread their nets way too wide.  In their attempt to track down Kathleen P Smith, they will call Kathleen A Smith and Kathleen B Smith and Kathleen C Smith and Kathy C Smith and Kathy T Smith and Cathy Q Smith and Cathleen A Smith and Cat Smith and an infinite number of others.  99% of those people, of course, have no idea what's going on, and do not deserve the snotty attitude of the callers.

written off  debt does not mean the i don't owe the amount-- it is true.  when the original owner of the debt "write off" the debt as a business loss they take the full amount of their taxes,  and then sell the bad debt to a collection agency.  even if they get "pennies on dollar"  it is better than nothing.  the collection agency will try to get thefull amount.....  when they are not successful...... guess what they do?  they write it off as "uncollectible" therefore it is a "business loss" and get tax credit .... not what they paid for it.....but the full amount which is what they were trying get but couldn't.  and turn around sell it to one of their kind.        again, if they get pennies on a dollar..... they are ahead....  on and on and on.... you know this is true--how could you not?  you are in same industry.;......look  how many "business' "  got something for nothing  and you have the intestinalfortitude big as great outdoors to say debtors are partly to blame for the recession?any...... ANY debtor is doing more toward ending the recession than you ever did....doing.... and will ever do..  you said "i too get these calls all the time."  how funny!     everybody knows people who get calls from collection agencies are the ones who is not paying their debts......... . so by your own words you are part of   the problem why we are in recession, aren't you?   why don't  you  take the beam out of your eye before rattling like a tambourine telling me i got a speck in mine........hasta la bye bye, yo yo...

I too get these calls all the time. I, however, would like to make sure that everyone is aware... bill collectors only call you when you owe a bill (or when you have paid it but due to a glitch in the system is not posted) Now, you did get it right the call is coming from someone in a cubicle but let’s be aware that jobs are hard to find and that person is neither soulless, or a monster, their a person providing for their family. if you really owe a bill for the past 15 years and have not yet realized that the charge gets written off to a new agency every few years so as not to be written off as non-paid debt then the joke is on you. I hope your Trailer is nice and comfy because a new house clearly is not in your future. I answered the call spoke to a kind person who set up a arrangement with me and I’m one step closer to righting the wrongs of my early twenties. Now that you know the number, grow up, put on your big girl or boy pants and work to pay off the bill that YOU OWE.  Credit Cards are NOT free money. I wonder why were in a recession??? Hum???

In this political climate, I doubt the law would be changed in favor of the collection agency. Far more likely, they are just breaking the law, either because they are dumb or don't care. Or they're scammers.  Criminals don't obey the law.  All they need to know is that you owed Chase (or whoever) and they can bluff their way through the rest.  Sitting in an internet cafe in Bulgaria, on Skype.  Don't pay them electronically, whatever you do.  Insist on a good old fashioned paper check mailed to a USA physical business address, and don't mail to it unless you are calling it up on Google Maps street view and seeing their name on the building.  Criminals often pay US citizens to "accept checks" for them, and forward the money to them.

the only contact that will renew their 7 year limit is if you acknowledge a debt they are claiming you owe. A lot of them are now just calling instead of sending out a collection letter which I thought was required before they can contact anyone by phone. I guess the rules got changed. Simply put when they call and you want them to stop calling. Answer and simply tell them that you do not have a debt owed and request that stop calling your phone number. And it is also a good idea to ask for their mailing address. Then you can send them a cease and desist order with your phone number in it notifying them that you do not owe on a debt that they claim you owe on. That is supposed to stop them from harassing you.

Not really.  They can contact you or vice versa.  As long as the SoL is passed, they can't do anything.  Just be absolutely sure you do not promise them anything, agree to any of their terms, or pay them even a penny (this reactivates the bill).  Just talking to them won't do anything at all except increase your aggravation level and encourage them to keep calling.

Nick, they can still collect once it's past the statute of limitations; however, there is no legal recourse and it cannot go on your credit report. That is unless you start paying them back; then they can re-age the debt and therefore, put it on your credit reports and take you to court if you stop paying for some reason. As far as collection attempts being limited to the statute; they are not. I thought the same as you are saying but after reading up on it; found out I was incorrect. Sorry!

626-209-2241

96 Report Long ago Unknown
Once the statute of limitations runs out, they can't sue you, so they are toothless tiger.  I'm not sure on the law regarding phone calls.   They definitely can send you letters forever.  They have one more suicide bomb they can throw at you.  They can "write off" the debt permanently. On the upside they'll no longer bother you.  On the downside, they will tell the IRS.  The IRS will consider it income this year, and demand income tax on it this year.  Most people don't know, but you can get out of it if you can show you were insolvent "back then when you went in default".

626-209-2241

96 Report Long ago Unknown
check your state laws.  My understanding is that after a period of time, they can no longer collect from you.  In my state, once the debt is six years old, it violates state law and they can no longer collect from it.  I understand you can also notify the credit bureaus and tell them that it violates state law and to remove it from your credit report immediately.Check your "fair debt collection act" in your state, or something similar.

Also, Enid......collectiion companies DO sell off debts to other agencies, but it violates federal law to harass someone about a debt that is more than 7 seven years old, or that has been written off for a variety of reasons. And these scumbags are also harassing the children & relatives of dead people.

626-209-2241

96 Report Long ago Unknown
Enid. Let me begin by telling you that bill collectors DO NOT ONLY CALL YOU WHEN YOU OWE a bill! I have been getting calls for years for someone I do not even know, coming from the same place. I have instructed them to stop calling, I have filed complaints (which only results in a brief reprieve from the calls). Our numbers are non-published, so they are not cold calling to try and located someone. The people they  ask for are not people I even know.  They almost always ask for the same two or three people. Much of this type of calling is scamming trying to get someone to either give up personal information and/or pay a bill they do not owe. Or they intimidate someone into paying off a debt that may not even be theirs, simply to end the harassment, which rarely does end it. You are right in your statement that the callers are generally someone who is simply trying to making a living, but they are working for disreputable scum.

That may be true, however if the debt is so old it is no longer on your credit report, paying it will do more harm than good. Paying anything on it will reamorritize the debt and it will be back on your credit and harm your credit rating. So while I would like to pay them and yes it is the right think to do, I will not open my credit rating to potential problems and I am sure many people feel the same way.

your an idiot if you really believe that compnies like these can still come after you after 15 years. Read the laws. 7 years they have it does not matter how many times your account gets sold. I check my credit report every year, and if something is still on there that should not be I dispute it and it gets removed. Sure they can still try I am sure they get some fools to pay up. The way I see it is if you owe something you should pay it but if it's been a few years then why bother? Your credit report has already been effected and paying it now is NOT going to raise your credit score very much if any at all.

I'm getting calls about a supposed bill from Southwestern Bell from 15-20 years ago. I caught them trying to overcharge me and canceled their service and they are still trying to get it. Everyone I've talked to at this bill collection place has been extremely rude. I told the guy I talked today that me and my family is barely making it from payday to payday and he still kept pressuring me. Hell, I don't even know if I have enough gas to make it to next payday and I've told my children that we can't even afford to rent $1 movies through Redbox, yet this guy is still telling me that I need to pay for something that was a ripoff in the very beginning.

Most of these bills are beyond the statute of limitations. Moreover, when you do set up payment arrangements, very often the payments you make are not properly credited. Worse yet, making a single payment restarts the clock for the statute of limitations. If you are not legally required to pay, don't. If you are legally required to pay, then talk to a legitimate credit counselor or attorney.  Do not EVER actually answer these calls.

Hello "Smarter than Enid", for the record, "Enid" is a shill therefore, she does not care what your story is. She believes that everyone who is getting collection calls is to blame for it. Shills also believe that debtors are the sole reason for the economy being the way it is!  As I had said above, trying to tell a shill your individual story is like banging your head against a wall; you're never going to get anywhere. It's not even worth it because these shills are ignorant, angry and hateful little children who are losing out on their commissions every time someone refuses to pay. Therefore, they don't care that you are not legally responsible for an ex-wife who is negligent in paying her bills. Perhaps they are bothering you still because they think you too are an imbecile and will give in and pay off her debts? By the way, having an ex-wife who is not responsible is not your mistake. We cannot control the behavior of others.   On that note; you mentioned that you had divorced 20 years ago. Are these collectors still trying to collect on these debts? If so, I would advise that you make them aware that they are well beyond the statute of limitations (for ANY state) and they stop bothering you immediately. You can send certified "cease and desist" letters to each one or perhaps have an attorney call them. This will ensure that they stop or there will be legal consequences for their actions. You certainly don't need the aggravation of these calls; especially since you are not the one they are looking for.   I will state for the record (especially since the shills will think I am a deadbeat because I stick up for people that are having their rights violated) that I too have no outstanding debts, aside from mortgage, car payment, etc. and I do not condone not paying legitimate debts but this "zombie debt" trend has to stop! Also, I agree with you whole-heartedly that collectors are not hard working educated people. This is apparent by their lack of knowledge or blatant disregard of  the simple "rules" of collecting known as the Fair Debt Collection Practice Act (FDCPA).  It drives me crazy when the shills start whining about people stealing money from Visa or Mastercard etal. They try to compare it to someone borrowing money off of you and not paying you back. I would have to say that a bank losing $1k is far less tragic than an average person being owed that, wouldn't you?

Enid, I live in a nice house and have a nice job and am well educated.  I don't live in a trailer and I know how to spell correctly.  I would advise you to learn to spell a little better.  Anyway, I have an 800+ credit rating and about 20 years ago went through a divorce where the ex decided to file bankruptcy afterwards and on the cards for which she was legally responsible.  As soon as she filed these wonderful collectors started calling me and have not stopped.  No, the cards are not listed on my report and I really don't care if they keep selling the debts for which my ex wife was responsible.  While jobs may be a little scarce for some, for educated and hard working people there is work.  Most all of these collectors are not educated hard working people but find bill collecting a little easier than flipping burgers or standing in a Walmart.  To each his own.  What do you do Enid?  We all make mistakes...one of mine was the ex wife that was not responsible and ran up the debts prior to our divorce...but we are not all totally responsible for these mistakes.  While I agree with you in some ways, you should not be so hasty to point fingers.  I commend you for being responsible.  Good for you.  It is not just the individuals that create this mess for so many, the credit card companies with their predatory lending practices are very much to blame as well and they can't have it both ways.  Do you know how much the executives at these banks make a year?

With respect Enid it's not as simple as that. Just as there are laws and dare I say morals for paying debts there are also laws controlling how the collection of an unpaid debt is collected. State Attorney Generals are becoming innundated with complaints about harrassment and unlawful collection practices by Portfolio and others like them. They prey on old items on credit reports. They prey on debts legally cancelled through a bankruptcy process. They illegally call 3rd parties having nothing to do with the debt and make threats while revealing much more detail than they are fully aware they are allowed to. I don't condone rudeness back to them but individuals have rights too and just because someone has made a mistake does not make it ok for debt collectors to harrass and break the law.

I completely agree with your statement. Trying to reason, or even discuss this, with a shill is like banging your head against a wall. The mere fact that she wants to "right the wrongs from her early twenties", which suggests they are old debts, should tell you she is a shill. The most interesting thing about shills is that, once they post, they never come back to respond to rebuttals. Or, if they do come back and respond; it's only to say the response to their post was from an idiot or "scumbag debtor". I was actually called a "professional debtor" because I used the term "counsel" in my post. I did apologize for using a "law term"; that tends to happen sometimes when you're actually in that field! I realize that this is only blogging; therefore, proper use of the English language is not totally necessary. However, whenever I see illiterate shills post nonsense, I tend to discredit their statements because they seem uneducated in the first place. Why listen to what they have to say? Seriously, anyone coming on here for the first time would notice the ratio of shill posts vs. irate consumer posts! That in itself says that the shills are lying. I do enjoy messing with them sometimes when they insist on continuing their posting...

I understand that you are perhaps taking accountability for your actions as far as money that is owed or may be owed to credit cards, however, you should probably do some research on how the collecting process works, maybe you would understand why so many consumers get angry over these call. Additionally, they call at illegal times and hours (i.e; Sunday morning at 6am, Monday nights at 10pm) and that is not only illegal, but unethical. So in conculusion,  I too am aware that bills owed should be paid, but they should be paid to the companies that you actually owe them to and to companies that don't do bad business when collecting the debts. P.S.-I know that my grammar is not always the best example, but you should really read your posts over before you post them. People might take you more seriously if you could actually spell correctly. "I took get these calls" huh? "their a person providing for their family" LEARN TO SPOKE! jk OH also, for the record, these "kind" people work for companies that will constantly try to collect on bills that have been paid already and will illegally keep collecting a fee to erase that debt from unsupecting consumers-CONSTANTLY. Do you work for a collection agency? THIS IS NOT THE REASON WE ARE IN A RECESSION> GET YOUR FACTS CORRECT!!!!

Enid, first, I appreciate that you are a moral person I'm glad you were able to make peace with yourself and God.  However, you didn't pay the company you owed, you paid (in Christian terms) moneychangers in the temple.  It is EXTREMELY difficult for moral people to navigate this complex and entirely evil business.  Everything you've been taught about right and wrong works backwards here because they have perverted it. I'm amazed they aren't all headquartered in Las Vegas... since Sodom and Gomorrah burned.  Sadly, they just, umm, Gomorrah-ized your credit score.  By paying this old debt, it's now back on your credit report for 7 years of bad luck.  It's unfair, it's senseless, "wrong is right".  That is the nature of evil, eh? The company you actually owed, is still in the hole.  They sold your debt for pennies on the dollar and they won't accept a "donation".  What you CAN do, is simply do business with them.   Become a good customer of theirs so they can profit in the normal way.

My dearly beloved who just recently departed this nasty world, was in the mortgage business and I believe it caused his poor health. We lost everything when he lost his last job...doors closed for no valid reason. Ignore the paid trolls who come on websites and boast about being a "satisfied customer" of a debt collector and make pathetic attempts to shame the public-at-large for not "paying their bills", which has nothing to do with the issue of PRA's illegal debt collection practices.A poster on another thread has just setttled a $25,000 lawsuit against PRA after they made illegal threats to garnish his wages and seize his assets over a non-existent time-barred debt which had been paid off years ago. They sealed their fate by continuing to call him after they had been served with the lawsuit. Check it out: http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-404-392-5171Bottom line is: Consumers are becoming more sophisticated, they are fed UP with the egragiousbehavior of debt collectors (such as PRA), and they are suing AND winning.

Yeah that is the most pathetic responce to anything I have ever seen on here. Turns out there calling me for a debt that was paid over 10 years ago. Further more legally its been well past the time limit they can call me. Further more your comment regarding them not being monsters then you decide to chime in for no reason about a living in a trailer? There rude and so are you. This recession was not caused by people not paying there bills it was caused by 4$ a gallon gas. 3$ loafs of generic bread and thousands of greedy companies that think they need to charge more for there products and all they found is they cut down the number of people that have access to those products generating even less revenue so they raise the price and again so on and so forth until no one can afford anything. Read your history books thats how every depression which is what this is not a recessession starts and it is exactly how this one started. How do you like your trailer? You must live in one you got a call from a collection agency and by what you said that means your down the path to living in a trailer..... Also I'm glad your correcting your mistakes. I never made one that's not stopping them from calling and thats not stopping them from calling most of the people they call either. Despite the fact that they know the bill is paid they never remove your number. So have fun wait 6 months until they start calling you again as if you never made a payment arrangement and you owe the full amount again. By the way your a condesending d***hit who has no common sence and really shouldn't be allowed on websites that are geared toward adults.

Debts of all kinds....traffic tickets to old ph bills or hospital bills get sold for 5 cents on the dollar so the original business can get anything for their files and close it. When I said she was out and offered to take a message he said (in a very strong Southern drawl) that he was Paul from Two Peas in a Pod in Little Rock and she needed to return his call. Neither of us have heard of them and we can find no such business. We do live in Little Rock though, but our phone number is non-geographic as we have Vonage so I'm wondering how he knew...

This guy called my parents house in Chicago and told them that I had an appointment with Katlin in Boulder and I was 30 minutes late to it. Then he gave my parents some bogus number to call them back on.  My parents have caller id and gave me this number. I called him back and started yelling at this guy and he started to making some buzzing noise and tell me I we had a bad connection. I just started calling him over and over to give him a taste of his own medicine and he stopped answering. What is weird is that I live in Denver but I put everything under my parents home number so I don't get these kinds of calls.  He obviously knew where I lived since he said I had an appointment in Boulder. Very strange.  He called my parents two separate days and always would call numerous times in a row.

I got a very similar call from this number as all of you are describing. The man on the line said he was in California and wanted to confirm my address, and asked my age, and proceded to tell me about the magazines. Yet he did not try to sell them to me. He told me that I had won 48 months of free magazines from 6 different subscribers, and just told me to enjoy them. He said that the final drawing would take place Dec. 31.I'm not sure what the deal is, but I havent given my number or adress to any companies, especially in Calf. Anyone know anything about this?

This guy called me last Friday saying the same stuff I was entered into a sweepstakes etc. he wanted to verify my address which he told to me correct and then proceded to sell me magazines I told him I wasn't interested and he continued to talk so I hung up he called me back and asked if we were disconnected I told him no I hung up because I am not interested and he hung up on me. I wouldn't say 5min later I received another phone call from a 310 area code and this man started harassing me saying that he knew who I was etc. He called me 5times Friday, then again on sat,sun and Monday I was on a delivery I deliver pizzas at night so I was on a delivery and the house I went to said they didn't order a pizza right when I was getting into my car I received a text saying they could see me and he loved looking at my pretty face I was completly freaked out I called the police department and filed a report I didn't receive any calls or text untill this morning the guy did it again said something relavant to my day I called the police department again and then I called this guy and let him have it on his Voice mail I told him everytime he calls me, text me I am sending it to the police department so if he is here where I am or really in Los Angeles I am going to press charges and if he is here where I am I am going to get him on a lot more than just harasment. Later today my husband called him because he kept calling me and this guy said he was scared that the police department had called him and he didn't mean to take it this far he just got my number from his friend that works for a telemarketing company and his friend wanted him to call me because supposidly I had some pills he wanted to buy. I looked up the telemarketing number on google and I got this so I looked up the number on a reverse look up and I got the name the phone number is under which is Carmen Vidal at 704 S Pacific Ave in San Pedro, Ca 90731I called San Pedro police department they said they couldn't do anything because I didn't live in that county so what I would recomend anyone who is receiveing these phone calls is to file with your county police department and then call San Pedro Police department 310-548-7721 and let them know what is going on so they take this more serious these people have our addresses our phone numbers lets try to protect ourselves. Look up Telephone Harassment Bureau and file a complaint with them as well

My wife answered the phone, and hung up on the gentleman on the end of the line.  He called back and I answered - I asked him to put us on his do not call list, and he started harassing me.  I asked him SEVERAL times for his name and company, but, he refused to give it to me.  I again asked him to put us on his DNC, and hung up.  HE CALLED BACK, and started yelling at me and calling me names, and hung up.  Since we don't have caller ID, I called *69 - got this number, and called him (not a great idea, I know, but, I just couldn't let it go).  The same guy answered, and told ME to stop harassing him, and that I was the one causing the problem.  He made some derragatory remarks about my wife (trying to get a rise out of me) and I asked for a supervisor, and he went on with some racist remarks, calling me names and all the while refusing to give me his name, or company name.  The main reason I even pursued it was he had my wifes name and our address.

They called 4 times on the same day on my cell phone. (I"ve never received solicitation calls on my cell phone, of which the phone number has only been given to close friends, family, and those who need it.)  They never answered.  However, the fourth time they said it was "publishers," and I told them to remove my number from their mailing list, and they said okay.

Wanting to send us business, asked to speak with the owner. Asked if they were trying to make a reservation. No, they want to send us business. Wanted to speak only with an owner. Owner doesn't take cold calls. Speak to the receptionist or no one at all...Caller said they would find someone else willing to business. Why is that if someone owns a legitimate business, 800 Notes is the only place you can find their phone number??? (Love you guys!)

I just got a call from some woman claiming to be from some marketing company wanting to send us business and asked to speak to the owner because they didn't have someone from our industry in this area. When I told them that we weren't interested, the woman rudely said "that's ok. We'll contact a professional company." and then she hung up. It's obvious these people are scammers or from a very unprofessional outfit. Our customers are local and contact us directly if they need service. This call was long distance and not even close to our area.

Legit businesses usually identify themselves better."Okay Jamie, and what's the nature of the call?" (Standard question #2)"We wanted to send him some customers." Like hell, she did. From where, 3000 miles away? Please."Very well," I said. "What company are you with? *...Hello?">Click
