Reporting doesn't stop the calls, if you read the donotcall.gov website you would know that.Once they receive enough complaints about a particular number, they MAY launch an investigation.  Every report does help build a case, so keep reporting, but don't expect the calls to stop.  Also report to the FCC.  Then, if you have a smart phone, download a free app like MR Number and block the calls altogether!

Another way is to place them in your contact list under a common heading like "SPAM" and then set the custom ring to "Silent"... it works for me. I am adding 2-3 such calls from different SCAM-SPAM numbers to my contact list (SPAM) and then I never get disturbed from them again.

For people wondering how someone could fall for a scam like this, there appears to be a biological reason why the elderly are more prone to fall for scams. It seems that elderly are far less likely to be able to recognize a scam, not because they are stupid or have been gullible their whole lives, but because the elderly have less activity in the part of the brain that detects risk. Also at an advanced age many people lean towards having a more positive view on life, and this can translate into trusting a scammer. Why do you think scammers are so aggressive towards senior citizens? It's because they know that they can be an easier "sell". So don't think Ingrid is stupid, she just may be more trusting due to a number of reasons, maybe some beyond her control.

Ingrid:  I know you posted this back in July, but perhaps you may see this anyway.I'm sorry you got taken by this scam.If you haven't already, I would suggest that you report this to the police, FBI and to the FTC.  Perhaps it will help them catch these thieves and stop them from doing this to others.  Don't be embarrassed.  Obviously you are not the only person to get burned by them or they would not be doing this.
Report by Pissed Long ago Unknown
Ingrid,Sorry to hear of your losses, And sorry there are so many ignorant fools making comments about your situation.  I understand totally what happened and how you feel.  These people that did this search for people exactly like you and steal from you.  My grandmother was constantly on their target list.  She lost her husband, My grandfather, who had done a great job of protecting her and managing the finances most of her life.  She had Alzheimer's and calls like this would come daily once she was identified as a good target.  We had to remove all financial information from her house since they called daily with scams that confused her and all she wanted to do is talk to somebody on the phone and they seemed so nice.Ignore the ignorant judgmental fools that judge you in this forum,  Most have no idea what has happened to you.  These scams are developed by people well versed in deception and target people just like you.  The responders so critical of you are from an era less trusting and are more conditioned to mistrust people.  There is nothing wrong with you other than you trust people and cannot comprehend the cold cruel word we live in today. Sadly, the people that commit these crimes are very good at hiding their identities, So I doubt you will ever recover anything,  I pray I'm wrong.  From now on, Do not share any private information or card numbers of any type with anyone but family.  If you are contacted for a "Deal", Ask the advice from family first.  I'm not sure if it is possible, but do contact a lawyer and see if you can put a lean on the timeshare so they cannot profit from selling it.Best of luck,  Keep in touch with the authorities for this matter and somewhere the people that stole you money may make a mistake trying to liquidate the timeshare and a real name could be reveled.  Change all your account numbers and prevent any billing you can.
Report by Wow Long ago Unknown
You're stupid for falling for this.
Report by G Long ago Unknown
You are an idiot just like the rest of them that have made uncalled for comments to someone that doesn't deserve what you all are dishing out to her. First off, you don't know this person and what her situation in life is so making any such comments are way out of line.  Hope you all get the same treatment you are handing out someday.  There is an old saying that one gets in return what they dish out.  It may take some time but it will happen.  When it does, don't boo hoo to anyone because you deserve it.

I received a call from a company Great Vacations Marketing out of Wyoming and from what I could tell it was a good company, the person that contacted me was Wayne O., phone 702-. Once we completed the first transaction of $1,335.00 on the Capitol One credit card, I was contacted by an individual by the name Joseph M. cell: 702- with Great Vacations Associates and he told me that we would go into closing March 2nd and that they already had someone that put 20% down and I need to send him $2,499.00 for closing which I did to Timeshare Network Solutions at the above given address with a credit card check again through Capital One.Shortly after I got a phone call from a person by the name Jackie and she told me that there was another fee to transfer title and deed of my Silverleaf Timeshare of $1,305.00 mailed to T.N.S.T at SE 18th Ave. Pompano Beach, FL 33060 gave me her FedEx account # 111069980. By that time, I am really concerned, well the 2nd came and went and no phone calls or check etc.Tried calling all phone numbers I had, three were no longer working and the other two no response only voice mail, tried the fax 407- no longer working, therefore I filed a police report with local Police case #HC10-29308 contact person Officer G.J. H. Unit 4C48 phone: 281-, filed a complaint with Wyoming BBB, a complaint with Attorney General in Florida by mail and a complaint with the BBB in Southern Florida. The total scam cost me $5,139.00. I contacted Capitol One and requested a new credit card and I just received notice that they can not find any fraud/scam not a surprise from this company since they don't want to cover any loss, contacted my Bank since I wrote a check for the last amount and alerted them of possible fraud and contacted Silverleaf in Dallas, Texas that there is no transfer of title or deed to take place that I was subject to a scam. I see that there is a report filed on 3/17/10 against Timeshare Network Solution in Boca Raton, FL. Right now, I am a very frustrated Senior Citizen and angry as a Hornets Nest. Please can you help? I may have lost the Timeshare that my husband and I own together along with some saving that my late husband has left me so my retirement years are a little easier. I work two jobs so that I don't have to depend on my children.PLEASE PASS THIS ON!  I was taken for an expensive ride...don't you do the same, please!

Today, I received several texts for two bracelets on craigslist, wanting to purchase both for his wife.  He/she advised me that they were in the hospital.  I advised him to send both the address they wanted it shipped to, and their full name, so I could fill out a ticket.  I had this funny suspension that it was a SCAM because both bracelets were different sizes!!!  Guess its  in case his wife gained water weight, and she needs a larger one to wear!!! LOL He told me to never mind the ticket as he just needed my paypal addy, because it would be safe for he and I, and my full name.  Now this came from a 323-374-5710.  He was very very persistent.  I asked him for his name as  I wanted to know who I was dealing with, and wanted to speak to them on phone.  They kept asking for my full name. He gave me his name of Harrison. LOLI texted and advised him that I was on the landline and would call him after I finished.  In a few minutes, my cell phone rang from the 563-484-0674.  When I answered, they hung up.  When I tried both numbers, it came up with a Google Answering Machine asking for me to leave my full name and they would return my call.Simply put....and this is my opinion...THEY NEED TO GET A JOB!

Wow that is the same person that did the same exact thing to my bf. Same exact scenario. He wanted to buy his xbox 360 for his nephew in Nigeria. Same cell phone number and he keeps texting him abt it. He added an extra $85 to the payment to include shipping but cancelled it right after it was shipped. He's been sending us fake paypal emails as well. We have reported him to authorities and now his "nephew" is in custody by the Nigerian police. Please email me with the exact details of what happened to you stylishkelly@gmail.com

I thought it was a little fishy because he was WANTING IT IMMEDIATELY and didnt care about price and offered to pay extra $85 just for shipping. he wants to use paypal of course and paypal email he gave me was MOORELUCAS12@YAHOO. So everyone BEWARE of this LOSER! BTW how does the scam work? If they send the money to your paypal first then you ship it...can they take the money back out? Just curious. thanks

Forward the text to 7726:Security company Cloudmark created a spam messaging reporting service that nation’s major wireless carriers agreed earlier this year to start using. Now, customers of AT&T Mobility, Verizon Wireless, T-Mobile, Sprint and others can forward their text spam message to 7726. The mobile phone carrier will ask customers for the phone number that’s linked to the spam message so they and Cloudmark can start investigating.http://www.ajc.com/news/business/text-spam-messages-on-the-rise/nSW3C/

He kept telling me that he could give me the info he was looking for once I gave him my info.  BEWARE!!!!!

I keep getting the same phone calls, sometimes from this number, sometimes another number, and sometimes an unlisted number.  Every time it is someone with an obviouly American accent, so if they're NOT originating from overseas.  I've tried to play along and get information but they abruptly hang up if they sense you have any intelligence.  Obviously they are looking for the quick scam.  Here are some tips if you want to play along.....1. Say that you have at least 2 credit cards.2. Claim that your interest rate is at least 19%.3. Don't say that you're almost maxed out on your credit limit.  (They need to think you've got something left to steal.)4. Don't press for the company name, they'll just tell you some worthless generic name anyway.5. Don't press for an address, they figure you're too smart and hang up on you.NOW FOR THE HARD QUESTION....It seems that a number of you have contacted the police or phone company and get the standard "there's nothing we can do" because it "originating from overseas" or "untraceable", etc.Honestly, if this was a terrorist call do you think it would take the Depatment of Homeland Security more than five minutes to figure out where these calls are coming from?  Based on the number of reports here, this is a large operation.  They are likely stealing lots of money.  I hope we devote our extensive resources to tracking Governor Spitzers liasons rather than something like this that might actually matter.

It seems to me that we have an unconsidered response to these phishers. I think the most satisfying thing to do would be to scam them right back. They want to waste our time trying to steal our money? Why not try to steal their time for our amusement.Once you know what seeing the number represents, the thing to do is make a game of keeping them on the line as long as possible talking about the things it amuses you to talk about. Things like falling in love with their voice and asking them to meet you in some seedy Orlando bar, telling them stories of first credit card and how it had four numbers (make these up) in common with the license plate of your girlfriend's first car, or that your an ear, nose and throat doctor and it sounds like they need a visit. See how many times you can make them explain what they want from you. Make fun of their voice, grooming habits and family lineage. Then laugh like a maniac and hang up.Oh, and look forward to their next call.

The next time I get this call I will press #1 and when the maggot gets on the line I will say " This is Agent Stevens with the FBI, look out your window". He will at least hear that before he hangs up. We need to get their heart pumping. This is big enough and I think its time for Dateline NBC.

I received a call today here in So.CA. from 407-207-0820 about lowering CC interest. I pushed #1 and played along to get information. The call is from Equity First Financial in Orlando,FL. The guy asked how much debt I had and on how many cards.I asked him what company this was and where he was located. Then asked me to give him the CC number, and the toll free number on the back of the card. Thats when I told him I didn't own a CC, and that I was going to report the company for calling since I am on the do not call list. He called me a F--Ken Jerk and hung up on me. The same company is using the number 954-733-7981. If you get their call, play along with them and get as much information as possible until they ask for your CC number. If you get all the information about the company you can report to your local police fraud Dept with all the information.

Calls my land line 4-5 times a day but I never answer.  I finally got fed up and answered so that I could tell them to take me off their call list.  Caller said he was with ADT and that they're running a promotion for a free security system and asked if we had a system already.  If he was with ADT he would have known that we are already customers and I even questioned him on why he didn't know that detail.  He said sometimes that's not information that's available in his computer.  B.S!  I did not tell him who our provider is but I did ensure he knew that our home is well monitored.  Not sure if these guys are trying to scam people into letting them into their homes under the guise of a security installation or if they're trying to scope out homes that do not have systems as a potential home to rob but either way they are definitely not ADT.

From what I've experienced (answered the land line phone, confirmed my last name, and was told I had won a free security system from ADT; "telemarketer" gave up too easily when I said I wasn't interested), read and heard (other women who were ready to accept the offer were hung up on when they went to get their husbands; people who try to call back get a recoded message about being added to a do-not-call list), and seen (the number belongs to a private individual--not ADT), I am concerned that the people calling may be operating a scam, even a theft ring.

Phantom Debt Collectors From India Harass Americans, Demand MoneyBy BRIAN ROSS (@brianross) , CINDY GALLI and MATTHEW MOSK (@mattmosk) June 7, 2012 Hundreds of thousands of cash-strapped Americans have been targeted by abusive debt collectors operating out of overseas call centers suspected of links to organized crime in India, law enforcement officials told ABC News. The calls are part of a massive scam, one that appears to target struggling Americans -- especially those who have gone online to apply for payday loans. Armed with personal information from those pilfered applications, the threatening callers, who claim to be debt collectors poised to initiate legal action, have managed to pry loose millions of dollars from their victims -- even when the victims never owed money in the first place."This is what we call a phantom debt collection scam," said Jon Leibowitz, the chairman of the Federal Trade Commission. "It's a very pernicious and innovative new fraud."Working through call centers in India, the commission estimates that the criminals have dialed at least 2.5 million calls, persuading already cash-strapped victims to send them more than $5 million. Some have reported receiving dozens of calls per hour. They are victims like Cindy Gervais, of New Orleans, who went online for a quick loan when her husband's car was hit by a driver who didn't have insurance.Even though she paid the loan off, the so-called "phantom" debt collectors with Indian accents began calling to say she still owed money. He more or less told me that if I didn't pay, they were going to have someone on my doorstep to arrest me," she told ABC News. "And that they were going to contact my place of business, and tell them what kind of person I am."At first, she said she resisted. Then the calls became more frequent, and started to ring on her cell phone, and at the grocery distribution company where she had worked for 27 years."I was more or less was in panic mode because he told me there would be someone before noon at my place of business to arrest me and take me to jail," she said tearfully. "So I agreed to pay him."After receiving scores of complaints, investigators with the FTC said they began tracking the calls, and following the payments. They alleged the payments led them to a California company run by an Indian-American named Kirit Patel, and that such scams would not be possible without American front men."I would say that all roads of this scam, or many of the roads of this scam, lead back to Mr. Patel," said the FTC's Leibowitz.ABC News tracked Patel for weeks, from the suburbs of San Francisco to Austin, Texas.Patel refused to talk. But his lawyer, Mark Ellis, said he believes it is far too early to pass judgment on his client. Ellis, a Sacramento-based attorney, told ABC News that Patel was hired for a nominal fee to set up an American shell company, and had no idea what the call centers in India were doing."I can tell you, he was as snookered by the people in India as anybody," Ellis said. "He's a 69-year-old man who is nearing his retirement who thought all he had to do was set up some corporations and everything was on the up and up. He's completely dismayed that he has become the lightning rod of this entire problem."A close friend of Patel's also defended him in a brief interview at his home, saying Patel was not trying to defraud anyone -- he was just an unwitting, bit player in a larger scheme."If Mr. Patel was just a cog in the wheel he seems to have been a pretty big cog," Leibowitz said. "It is clear that Patel was integrally involved with this scam."Leibowitz points to thousands of pages of financial and phone records gathered by the FTC and filed as part of a civil case brought against him in the U.S. District Court in Sacramento last month. When FTC lawyers sought to freeze his assets and prevent his business from continuing to operate, Patel responded by invoking his rights against self-incrimination. His lawyer told ABC News he has had to be careful in how he responds to the allegations in civil court "because there is a potential criminal action," but that Patel maintains the allegations against him are false.Federal investigators said the phantom debt collection operation that allegedly benefitted from Patel's assistance was one of several that all trace back to the same small town in Western India called Ahmedabad. Callers use technology to make it appear that the calls originate inside the U.S. Victims provided ABC News with recordings of dozens of the calls, and many of the thickly accented callers appear to be reading off a script."Subpoenas have been readied, and Monday morning you're going to be picked up from your home," one caller says on a victim's voicemail. "And you have children. Don't worry about your children. We have a childcare department to take care of the children.""You will be behind bars for six months," said another caller. "And once you go behind bars, you will lose your job. Once you are behind the bars, you won't get a single drop of water."William Peerce Howard, a Tampa attorney who represents victims of harassment from debt collectors, said it takes an especially twisted criminal to use threats and coercion to pry money from someone who is already struggling financially"These guys really are the most visible villains in America today," he said. "They make a living scaring people."Mark Merola, of Florida, said he just panicked when the caller told him he might be arrested at the deli where he works in a Florida retirement community."I was nervous. I didn't want to embarrass myself, my family," he said. He used his debit card to pay the collector $576.Afterwards, he says he realized "how stupid I was." "It just happened so fast," he said. "I got scared." Leibowitz said he hopes with more attention, future potential targets of the scam will recognize red flags before they turn over any money. If callers say they are from the police, consumers should know that law enforcement officers do not collect debt for private parties. If the caller is speaking with a thick Indian accent, but calls themselves by a names such as Officer Mike Johnson, that should be a tip off. And if they're calling 40 times in two hours, that's another red flag. "Legitimate debt collectors, legitimate pay day lenders don't do those sorts of things," he said.Merola said he would like to see anyone involved in the scam prosecuted aggressively."There's no place in society for these people," he said. http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/phantom-debt-co ... 16512428&page=2
