ANY TIME you get an email for a supposed company, look at where the email came from, a legitimate company with a legitimate web sight means they have email accounts and will NOT use free web accounts (yahoo, gmail, gmx, etc...) .  And number 2, there is NO REAL JOB cashing checks for an "international company".   Total BS no matter who it comes from.   I hate seeing people get scammed, but all it takes is a little common sense and paying attention to what they send.  Remember if it too good to be true, then it is probably not true.

I have also received information from Maria Hisher Personnel managerBaltic Travel CompanyFax: 206-337-8048Like many of you I am unemployed as well and it seemed to good to be true. So I forwarded the info to someone I trust, then I started to really research the company and I found Baltic Travel Company to be legit but this Maria lady, I couldn't find her any where. I looked on Myspace, facebook, nothing. So I typed in the number you see above and saw she was in Seattle. What the heck that didnt make sense. So I read all the other statements that are posted here and it was clear. SCAM!!! Glad we have websites like this to tell our story so others can read this and decide if they want to go through the pain of being thrown in jail, or anything else. So sad, hope this helps someone, because these other posts sure did help me.

Definately a SCAM!! They are using different travel company names, sending contracts and job description for travel coordinator jobs, but it's all a fraud related to cashing cheques or money transfers with Western Union, etc. E-mails come from MARIA HISHER maria.hisher@gmx.com and the fax number she gives +1-206-337-8048 where to return contracts appears to be in Seattle, US. Can anyone suggest a way of stopping them?

Russian Scam. They try to hire me on the internet because they saw my resume for a fake job and they actually used real international travel agency  in Italy. I filled out a fake application and they sent me a fake signature blah, blah, blah. I started to doubt them when this number called me instead of from Italy and then they sent me a check to cash for them and sent to Ukraine and keep 5% of the commission. Why do they need me to cash this check when this number is from CA? Why did the supposed name on this check who there are scamming live in CA and yet they sent the package with the check from UT?  I started thinking, why not to Italy? You will believe anything when you are unemployed and I wonder how many people  have actually felt for their scam.

I did not actually ask for information. I learned the hard way to never check "yes" when asked if you would consider going back to school in the future. I'm about to change my number because I'm tired of being harassed about going back to school. Yes, I'd like to, but not till all my kids are in school - about 2 more years! I get calls every single day, several times a day. They don't even leave a message. I can understand if they want to call to check your interest, but if you don't answer, they should leave a message and only call once every few days. I get more calls from them in one day than I should get from them in a week.

The person I talked to got mad and tried to turn the problem on me. I don't think so.

Ok, I think we all get that it is a real University.  What the people that attend there don't understand is that those of us who have requested information and have decided we are not interested are still receiving phone calls that we do not want to receive.  Today alone they have called me 6 times and they continue to call right up until 10 at night.  The point is that if someone says they are not interested and would not like to keep receiving calls, then they should respect that and stop.

Actually Ashford is a real university. I got my Masters from them and they are a regionally accredited university. They do push for people to enroll but it was worth it in my opinion. Ashford University is not a scam. They may have been annoying you when calling so much - but they are real. I got my online degree from them. They are regionally accredited. Just like the all of the state schools in the nation. I go there and it is an alternative to walking onto my campus, Penn State. They have the same accreditation as Penn State. So pick up the phone, ask them to stop calling, and they will. Their campus is in Iowa, but have online courses to help people who cant go to a campus, and dont want to pay $20,000 more to go to the other online school. Ashford is providing a service that about 85,000 people take advantage of to improve their life.

THAT DOES NOT MEAN THAT THEIR PRACTICES ARE HONEST.Senator Tom Harkin (D-IOWA) thinks Ashford University is a scam, as well as the US Department of Education's OIG audit services devision.  After calling me 5 times in one morning (I absolutely did not request information, nor do I provide my information to anyone!) they denied it and said that they only called me once.  They denied the information regarding the senate hearings and OIG audit and said I should do more research on who is providing that information.  U.S. Department of Education audit In May 2008, the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Inspector General (OIG) audit services division commenced a compliance audit of Ashford University covering the period March 10, 2005, through June 30, 2009. The OIG audit reached the following conclusions: Audit focus[21] Audit result[22] Compensation policies and practices relating to enrollment advisers Rewarded recruiters based on their success in securing enrollments Calculation, timeliness, and disbursement accuracy of Title IV program funds Improperly retained at least $1.1-million during the 2006-7 period Student authorizations to retain credit balances Kept credit balances without the proper authorization Maintenance of supporting documentation for a student's leave of absence Took too long to return money awarded to students who withdrew The stock of Ashford's parent company, Bridgepoint Education, fell the most in almost five months when the misuse of federal student aid was first publicly disclosed in 2009.[21] When the official results were released in 2011, Senator Tom Harkin said this audit "reveals the same troubling pattern of for-profit colleges' taking advantage of students and taxpayers." The Department of Education has not yet responded to the findings.[22] The audit was the subject of a U.S. Senate committee hearing on March 10, 2011.[23] [edit] 2011 Senate Hearings On March 10, 2011 Senator. Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) chaired a hearing of the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee that examined a case study of Ashford's parent company, which has experienced near-exponential profit growth in the last few years despite low graduation rates. Bridgepoint owns two universities that it purchased when both were near bankruptcy, Ashford University in Iowa and the University of the Rockies in Colorado. When it purchased Ashford University in 2005, it had less than 300 students but today it claims to have over 78,000 students, 99% of which are online.[24][25] [2] Senator Harkin took issue with the fact that despite such growth of the company, student success was lacking. According to information provided by Senator Harkin in the committee hearing, 63% of students who enrolled at Ashford University during the 2008-2009 school year withdrew before completion of their perspective program. Senator Harkin pointed out that Bridgepoint recorded more than $216 million in profits in 2010; of which 86.5 percent of its revenues come from federal funds. In reference to the dependence of Bridgepoint on public funds, Senator Harkin was quoted as saying, "I think this is a scam, an absolute scam."[24]

Senator Tom Harkin (D-IOWA) thinks Ashford University is a scam, as well as the US Department of Education's OIG audit services devision.

Just wanted to say I got a degree from Ashford and working on my second degree, this is a real college with a credited curriculum. I have been to a brick and mortar school and a online school, and for me and others I have talked to online classes are much more challenging. I have also talked to prespective employers and the do a lot of having from online schools and the top school is Ashford. I know teachers at the other online schools you see on tv and was told teachers have to pass each student even if he fails his assignments. Ashford does not push people through to get that money. They actually care about there students.

Strange. I attended Ashford. Earned 33 credits. All credits transferred to another university. I earned an A.A. from a top rated, highly accredited university after attending Ashford. So, unless the university I attended isn't "real" - then their football program who play against many "real" colleges must be fun to watch. Why would a "real" college lose to a college that doesn't exist?

So 'LetsGetReal' what happens when you did NOT request the information? I am currently preparing to enroll for my Internship for completion of my 3rd degree and have requested NO information. However, I can say this: the calls began right after the ad started to appear on my FACEBOOK page. Could this be coincidence? Maybe. But then again, maybe not. So, maybe some should stop attacking the University, maybe some should "own up to their request"... but maybe, just maybe, some should stop being rude to others who are unsure of how they may have gotten on the call list to begin with, or possibly to those who are just confused on how to get them to stop, or even to those who are just wondering if it is an accredited or real University and if so is anyone else experiencing issues. Maybe, just maybe.

Okay-I understand that it can be very, very annoying to receive these calls-yes-they can be worse than a collection agency, however, they are only calling because someone requested the information. Now-SERIOUSLY-is it that big of a deal. Just ignore the calls, or tell them that you are NOT interested any longer. Block the number if it is that bad. Be an adult. Own up to your request and take appropriate action. Libel DOES NOT fly out the window in this case. Libel is libel-perhaps you SHOULD go back to educate yourself. I checked it out. I too am annoyed with the calls, but I asked for the information. I told hem I was not longer interested, and they DO keep calling, but eventually- I will be an old lead for them and they will stop. Minutes? What kind of plan do you have? Get a real plan--and an education.

858-513-9240

If you tell them you aren't interested they will continue to call, to follow up and find out if things have changed. You have to say "do not call" and maybe even "put me on your do not call list and stop sending me emails" If you do that they have no choice but to stop calling. But you have to say that for each phone # that they have on file, keep that in mind as well

when you tell them to stop calling, and they are calling a cellphone, using up my minutes, and they KEEP CALLING, then they are harassing and libel flies out the window since they are not sincere about removing the number when they have been told to stop calling and remove the number.  if the FTC had teeth (and they have been reported each time they call), then the individual wouldn't have to consider filing with the state attorney general for criminal harassment and wouldn't have to follow up with civil action because they failed to do what they were told to do.  do they have to be sued to stop the harassing phone calls?

I would have to agree with Senator Tom Harkin.  I think Ashford is a scam.  I went to Ashford for two years for Early Elementary and then decided to go to a local college to get the proper education for where I was going to teach.  They took over a year to return my student loan to the lender and my advisor did not advise me properly and I now owe Ashford $1000.00 for leaving the school before the end of there semester.  Therefore they will not release my credits until I pay them off and i do not have that much money therefore I wasted all that money for nothing and i am unable to finish my education without starting all over again which means more money for student loans.  They are scammers..  I would never go to that school again.

I am currently enrolled in an online program at Ashford.  I have a 4.0 gpa in my first year, and the courses are no walk in the park.  People drop out because they think they are going to get an easy degree, and can blow off the discussions and b.s. the papers - and there is a paper due every week in every class, as well as discussion boards and other work.  The tuition is very reasonable, and I am fully confident I am getting my moneys worth out of my education.  Students are kept appraised of the recertification process the school is going through, and they're being quite transparent about what problems have been found and what remedies are being proposed.Your post, by the way, would get a failing grade.  You do not cite your sources.  It appears to be from Wikipedia, which is an unreliable source and unacceptable as a source in any Ashford class.

Just received a call from 2 guys with heavy Indian accents.  The phone number showed up on my caller ID as 050-169-5314   They claimed I was granted $20,000 by the U.S. Government for paying taxes.  I would need to pay a security deposit of $149 to receive the money via a Western Union transfer.  The first guy Johnny Brown transferred me over to the second guy who claimed to be James Parker.  He provided the phone number 202-657-5098 to call him back when setting up the transfer of money at western union.  I personally call Western union to to verify the information and they state this is scam Please Beware!!!

Hey Kevin, 050 is the area code cell phones for the country of Dubai. There was no delay so the connection must be over the Internet. They may be in country with their cell phones. I reported this to the website www.ic3.gov which is a partnership between the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the National White Collar Crime Center (NW3C), and the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA). It is probably difficult to bust the whole ring.

Texas...just got the same call.  I asked if there was anyone that I could call to verify what the foreign man was telling me.  He gave me the name of a Jim Berker and a phone number where Mr. Berker would be at...202-657-5098.  Apparently, I was approved for a $20K grant.  Thanks for letting me know what a scam this is.

I just recieved he same call wanting to give me $20,000 in exchange for $149.00 but I was supposed to go to the local grocery.  I played along to be able to get as much info from him that I could.   I called the FBI, local police, and the Washington, D.C. police.  All agreed it was a scam.  I am now in contact with my local TV station for them to put it on the news.  If anyone gets a call from this number report it to your local police, then call your local TV station.  The Washington, D,C. police said they could not trace the number (they tried while I was on the phone with them) because it is a drop phone like Boost Mobile, etc.  Don't fall for this and let especially any elder person you know about this.  Also, this man who was apparently of Middle Eastern desent said his name was James Parker. lol.  He knew my home phone number, cell phone number, and my home address.  How he got this information is beyond me.  Call your phone companies and have them put a block on his number.  Another scam on the internet:  You might get an email from your service provider asking you to update your account information by asking your email address and your credit card info.  This is also a scam to get your person information.  Don't go there.  Forward it to your service provider.Reply !

Yeah, I just got off the phone with a guy with a think Indian (country) accent. I got the same shpeel everyone else gets. I am a good person, paying my taxes, and this is a kickback from my taxes. It is a grant so I don't have to pay it back. He asked me what I would use the money for. I said fixing up my house. He said good, that I am a good taxpaying person, and he was "damn sure" I would not mis-use the money for gambling or anything like that. LOLI am to go to the Western Union at the local Rite Aid (there is no Western Union there) and bring $149 with me, so they can verify my photo ID. I am to call him before I go into the store. I told him I don't have the 149 but he could just take it out of the $20,000 grant I was getting. Of course he said they could not use that money because it is mine. So I told him I would borrow the money. He wanted to know exactly how long it would take for me to be at the Rite Aid. I said 1 hour because I had to get the money first. I am trying to figure out if there is some way to bust him.  THIS IS AN OBVIOUS SCAM. The government does not pick your name out and send you grant money. And they don't need money to verify your photo ID. It is kind of funny to me that these guys could not tell I was stringing them along.

Just got the same call except they told me that I would get 20,000. All I needed to do was pay $199. The guy who called me said his name is Shane and his employee number is 2048. He called from an unknown number but then said if I needed to call back to call (202)657-5098. He also told me that they're address was 200 Independance Ave, Washington D.C., DC 20201. Please be aware that this is fraud and do not give any money.
